The committee organizing the day wanted a date significant to elephants in Thailand.Initially, they considered the anniversary of a famous elephant battle involving King Naresuan.However, that date was already designated for the Thai military.So, they looked for another option. They realized that March 13th held a special connection to elephants. On that date in 1963,
the Royal Forest Department officially declared the white elephant as Thailand’s national animal.
They felt this connection made March 13th a perfect fit for Thai Elephant Day, and the Thai government agreed.
So, Thai Elephant Day serves to honor the Asian elephant and its historical and cultural importance in Thailand.
